Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the US, is a performer and actress. Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and singer. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. The couple separated at the time Latifah was ten years old. Latifah went to Catholic School in Newark, New Jersey and was raised in her family's Baptist Church. Latifah was the stage name she used at the time she was eight years old. The word means extremely delicate in Arabic. Always a tall girl at 5'10, Latifah was a power forward on her high school basketball team. She performed the hit song home from The Wiz at a performance in high school. Latifah was a beatboxer in The Ladies Fresh rap band. Latifah was member of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers that gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James aka the DJ Mark the 40 King, created an audition for the rap Princess of the Posse by Queen Latifah. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps the Fab Five Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was intrigued by the tune. The singer signed Latifah and dropped her debut single Wrath of My Madness in 1988.
